Viral Infections – Use of antibiotics

Polite Notice

Please note that antibiotic medication is used to treat bacterial infections.

Viral illnesses are not bacterial and antibiotics will not be prescribed to patients who are suffering from a viral illness.

***

Viruses and bacteria have a different structure and a different way of surviving.

Viruses are surrounded by a protective protein coating; they don’t have cell walls that can be attacked by antibiotics like bacteria does. It is because of this that antibiotics don’t work on viruses.

***

On occasion, patients become upset when they are not given a prescription for antibiotics.

***

Please be reassured that antibiotics will always be prescribed when a patient’s illness warrants their use.

***

However, there are strict prescribing guidelines around antibiotic use.

***

Thank you for your understanding.
